I’ll Follow The Sun

Lalu kenapa judulnya I’ll Follow The Sun?

Karena ada lagu The Beatles–direkomendasiin temen–liriknya pas banget sama situasi sekarang. Haha.

One day you’ll look to see I’ve gone
For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun
Some day you’ll know I was the one
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

And now the time has come
And so my love I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you will know, oooh

One day you’ll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

Yea, tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun
And now the time has come
And so my love I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you’ll know, oooh

One day you’ll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun

Yup. This is for the best. From now on, I’ll follow the sun in the land of the rising sun, specifically in my sensei’s laboratory. Hahahaha.

Hope you’re always doing well.

Pengalaman Lomba Foto: Bulan Dirgantara Indonesia 2017

Oke.

The Event

Ternyata tahun lalu penyelenggaranya Nikon. Yaudalah ya, namanya belum jodoh.

Lalu berangkatlah saya, naek KRL sambung Gojek. Sempet nyasar dulu yang mengakibatkan naek Gojek dua kali. Tapi gapapa. And we gotta live with that.

Yha. Fighter jet-nya cuma static show doang. Yha. Terus cuma ada Su-27 doang. Yha.

Yha.

Tapi gapapa. Lumayan terhibur dengan dynamic show-nya. Salah satunya atraksi semacam rescue team gitu pake Helikopter Phanter.

Selain itu sisanya hanya berburu static show.

Tapi bodo amat lah. Toh gak mengubah pixel.

Dreams Don’t Turn To Dust

Terus, menang nggak?

Oh pasti nggak, dong. Hahaha. Bahkan saya gak nungguin pengumumannya yang diadain malem-malem. Mlz amat. Plus saya pun gak nungguin pengumuman door prize Joyflight pake Eurocopter Colibri padahal pengen banget. Tapi too much effort karena harus nunggu sampe sore dan saya sadar diri kalo tingkat ke-hoki-an diri saya ini tergolong rendah. Yha-sudah.

Beres pulang hari Sabtu, saya malah ke Bundaran HI sama O akibat busway yang sekonyong-konyong malah masuk tol keluar Komdak, walhasil gak bisa turun di Stasiun Cawang.

DSC_0110
Ini sopir busway-nya malah klaksonin waktu saya foto. Malah saya bales dadah-in sopirnya. Ehe. (terus seneng)

Esensinya?

Apa yah.

High Key & Low Key Photography: Low Budget Experiment

Some people say that photography is a luxurious hobby; required bunch of money to acquire expensive gear in order to create stunning photos. Well, I won’t say it’s wrong. Myself is included in the disciples of a somewhat popular statement: gear equals photo quality, which means; the more expensive gear you have then the greater photo quality you could get.

But the statement above does not mean for the opposite; if you acquire mediocre or entry level gear, doesn’t mean that you cannot produce stunning photos. There are many challenges on youtube where several professional photographers given entry level DSLR with mediocre lens, yet they still capable of producing great photos. Well, as a newbie photographer–who sometimes blame her cheap gear when she couldn’t get a proper shot–this fact actually pissed me off. On the brighter side, it drives me to be more creative. I realized that the true power behind every great photos is skill, not gear. Eventually, this fact had my mind to think out of the box. Ow-yeah.

The Origins

Honestly, it was my friend who intoxicated me with the idea of low-key and high-key photography. I was being too pre-occupied with the idea of long exposure I forgot about the others. But then I googled it more, and become more interested. But then after seeing youtube videos about how to do it–light stand, tripod, umbrella, backdrop–me ain’t got no money, bro. So I just dropped this whole idea right away.

Then suddenly this friend gave me his low-key photo and I was like “Duuude how could you do it, did you rent that expensive light studio stuffs?” then he answered that he only used his phone flash plus his girlfriend’s phone flash and I was even more shocked. The other day when we met at the office, I asked for his expertise then so my own experiment begins.

Low Key: The Ingredients

  1. One Xiaomi Phone Flash
  2. Nikon Entry Level DSLR
  3. 18-55mm aka Kit Lens (cuz me ain’t got no anything wider, dude)
  4. One cute niece
  5. One cute nephew

Low Key: Results

Not so great, huh? The cuteness of my nephew and niece didn’t captured well on those photos. They all looked gloomy even somewhat creepy. Although it was difficult to capture it because, you know, kids especially in toddler age moves a lot. I should find the right moment when they give the right expression. Well oh well, what can I do. Me ain’t got no boyfriend or even husband so I should utilize every possible resources available. Haha. *silently sobbing*

After some discussion, my friend gave me suggestion that if my object is baby, I should try high-key instead. At first I doubted that I could do it cuz I would need some clear bright background to do it. Plus, high-key requires more light into the camera, which means I should keep my niece and/or my nephew do a static pose–boy one does not simply to make them do it. They are a creature with full of bouncing energy. After some contemplation, one idea came to me; how if I do it with static object instead? A little one, preferably, so I could just use plain HVS paper as my background.

Then so the second experiment begins.

High-Key: The Ingredients

  1. One Xiaomi Phone Flash
  2. Nikon Entry Level DSLR
  3. 18-55mm aka Kit Lens (cuz me ain’t got no anything wider, dude)
  4. One small toys with good quality plastic which you “borrowed” from your nephew’s toy box.
  5. Three HVS plain paper
  6. Some carton or anything to make your background stands. (Even the famous Khong-Ghuan can)
High-Key: Behind The Scene

High-Key: The Results

Banana!

After somewhat successful attempts with Minion, I decided to stick those HVS paper on the wall and lured my nephew amd niece to stand in front of it. Hoho. Here’s the results.

Despite of too-zoomed in photo, I think the cuteness and the bright mood has been successfully captured into the shot. Some might complain about why I took it too close–dude I had limited white background with only 3 A4 paper combined, this is the best that I could get. Haha. Although, if I gain a little bit more niat and buy white karton manila, I could make it better.

Epilogue

With limited resources and null budget, there’s still possibility to keep being creative and producing something. Just remember the old proverb you can find in the bottom of every page of KIKY notebook when we were still in school:

Where there is a will, there is a way

Peace out.

Sincerely,

Firly — the self-proclaimed amateur photographer and research scientist wannabe.

Bogor Street Photography

After living in this town for 25 years approximately, I just realized that I never captured the beauty of this town properly. Maybe I’m already get used to it, so when someone visit Bogor for the first time and said that it is beautiful, my usual response would always be ‘Meh!’

There’s some quotes saying that you will appreciate something right in the moment when you will lose it. Okay. Maybe it’s right. Counting down to my exile date from Bogor–even from Indonesia–I tend to take more appreciate on small things. So when the usual introverted-mager-me would spend the rest of Sunday by doing house chores and laying in bed, last week I decided to take my camera and capture the beauty of my hometown outside!

Well, not really.

I’m still the mager one. Unfortunately last week, I couldn’t be one. Why? For the sake of brighter future ahead, I need to go to Post Office to send some frickin documents. So I went there by Grab-Bike, but I took a moment to include my Nikon in my purse just because it was Sunday morning, everyone would be doing sports near Post Office sidewalk, the weather was so bright, so.. why not?

DSC_0937-1
My typical Bogor in Sunday morning.

Since the not-necessarily-new major, Bima Arya reigns, Bogor’s primary road; Jalan Ir. H. Juanda, has been transformed into one way only (known as Sistem Satu Arah). Because there’s less traffic in that road now, the Major decided to widened the sidewalk in order to give more rooms for pedestrians and bicycle ppl. Seems cool, huh?

Let’s walk! It’s happier.
Bogor’s current major; Bima Arya. Long may he reign.

At this time I also got a chance to captured one of Bogor’s mascot which you can see in a pack along at Istana Bogor’s park; deer alias uncal in sundanese. It brought back some memories of my middle and high school time. Why? Because my mid & high school located in Juanda road, so every after school time when I was waiting for angkot to go home, I fed the uncal with spicy cimol and they liked it in spite of seemingly looked spicy alias kepedesan. Lol. I liked the way the deer looked when eating spicy cimol so it was my daily routine. But then after some time I started to get worry if they might get diarrhea, I stopped doing it. Haha.

I wish it was cimol, not carrot.
Sniff.. sniff where’s the cimol? I don’t want carrot.
Waiting for someone.
Such beauty.
Just another day of sun.

I should mention that this is my first-ever solo street photography hunting. I thought it wouldn’t be so difficult because people nowadays see camera all the time. They took thousands selfie, wefie, hell they even update their life event via instastory every damn minute. But boy.. I was wrong. Not for DSLR. It turned out that mbak-mbak ukhti dressed like me, holding DSLR in the street was a peculiar phenomenon for them. Some of them creeped out when I pin-point my lens and avoiding me. Luckily I picked my tele lens over another, so that I could still take a photo without being accused as a creepy stalker. Haha.

It turns out, not every one of them. Once I took a picture of a kid who fed the deer with carrot and then smile to the parents (so that I didn’t look as a potential kidnapper lol), the parents smiled back. It was nice, actually. Smiling to strangers. One of unique experience is when I took a photo of a gang of soccer-supporter-kid and they were just posing right away.

First photo. Calm pose.

On the second photo, they posed quite cheerfully but boy I blame my shaky hands for blurring it.

When Persib meets Persija.. in Bogor.

But still, quite an experience.

Another thing I found, there was some two-wheels vehicle used by Mbak-mbak Satpol PP to patrol on the sidewalk. Frankly I dunno why. The sidewalk always been free of pedagang asongan, though. Was it only to look fancy? Well, probably.

Two-wheels vs Four-wheels
Two-wheels, up close.

Aaanyway, it was quite an experience. Although I should’ve woke up earlier and walked more far to get more cool photos, still worth it.

Ever since I realized that painting in canvas and digital drawing much costlier, I have chosen photography as the way to fulfill my thrist of artsy-picture-fetish. Haha. Experimenting on photography helped me to relieve stress and increased my serotonin level aka I am become much happier. I found that it is creativity which drives people to feel alive. There are million fields in that you can being creative for, but remember when you’ve found some interest, do not ever stop to explore it.

Creativity is one of human’s right and no one should ever put any boundaries in it.

DSLR Lens DIY Cleaning Experience: A Rookie Mistake

So, if by any chance you notice grammar mistakes in my post and that’s tingling you, feel free to remind me on the commentary box. Or if you found it but you just don’t care enough, just enjoy.

The best foolish experience is the one that can still bring out an useful insight for the others

–quote by me, created just a minute ago.

Unsurprisingly, this quote is what brought me to document this foolish experience on my blog, even though my credibility as an intelligent human being is at stake. But yes, I do this because I know, someone out there, some rookie photographer like me might still wondering about how to clean that teeny tiny fungus of his/her lens DIY-way because they are simply got no enough money or just being extremely frugal to take the lens to service center. Maybe they’re just being curious. Well, congratulations buddy, you’ve found the right article!

Pompeii

So I am up into something, these days. Something big, actually, cause it can dramatically change my whole life. Nope, it’s not marriage related thing, unfortunately. Then so.. I was rumbling through some blogs containing about this thing then end up stuck with one particular blog belongs to one man who living a life that I’ve been dreaming of. Posts through posts I read like an ultimate stalker I am, sometimes I checked this blog once a week when I have a free time in the office. It’s a simple blog, actually. Just a common journal about someone who’s been studying abroad.

Oops.

Then I came to a certain post containing some music video. It’s Pompeii, by Bastille.

So it’s a music video with some great music in there. But why bother to post it into the blog?
